A message from the Vice Chancellor...Daystar University.

In line with the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and its responsibility to uphold the rights of all children, Daystar University initiated the Child Development Programme to equip Christian Professionals in the field of ministry to children, with the right skills and knowledge to ensure the protection of rights of all children.

     The Child Development Programme is well aligned with the Kenya Children’s Act 2001 which is also chapter (cap) 586 of the laws of Kenya. As such, the overall goal of the programme is to support the full realization of the rights of children. By studying Child Development, our students who come from various child-focused Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations as well as Christian leaders gain useful information that allows them to evaluate the state of children services in their countries and workplace. This helps to detect children with abnormal or delayed development so that services can be developed and provided for their maximum growth and developmental needs.

Our Child Development program is designed to empower Christian Professionals to help children develop holistically, that is, intellectually, social-emotionally, physically and spiritually. By investing in efforts that nurture our student’s responsibility and accountability for children, we are training the next generation of professionals who are able to touch and affect the lives of children long into adolescence and adulthood, and spiritually for eternity.

     Today, the field of Child Development is experiencing strong growth. This is partially because the state of children in Africa is grave with many children faced with alarming levels of poverty, malnutrition, low access to quality education and unacceptable levels of violence, abuse, neglect and spiritual stagnation. Further, a unique window of opportunity is opening for Africa as significant regard for children is increasing. The funding community has made children, Africa and AIDS a high priority. We have other global and continental initiatives targeting children like the Global Alliance for Advancing Holistic Child Development and the African Alliance for Holistic Ministry to Children that have also come up to challenge governments and academic institutions to embrace and change their attitude towards children through reflection on how Jesus interacted with children, what He said about them, and the lessons He taught about and through children.

A career in Child Development is therefore a priority for all young students and Christian Professionals with a passion for children as well as for all persons working with children in the private, public sector and with Faith Based Organizations. Moreover, with healthy salaries across this field, Child Development jobs do offer both personal and economic rewards and a chance to shape the lives of tomorrow’s thinkers and leaders. Our graduate students in Child Development are examples of stars in the orbit. Many of them have been promoted to senior managerial positions to oversee ministry to children programmes in national and international organizations.

By investing in Child Development through the creation of understanding of the worth and significance of children in God’s eyes and plan among our students and clients, Daystar  University is modeling the spirit of being hospitable to children and accountable to them, as demanded by Jesus in Mathew 18: “ whatsoever you do to these little ones, you do it unto  me” .
